The first fiber cable unit has been installed on Subaru telescope

Comments Off on The first fiber cable unit has been installed on Subaru telescope

We PFS project passed two big milestones recently. We will talk about them in this post and the next. The fist milestone is the first fiber cable unit, which was delivered to Hawaii Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in the end of the last year, has been installed on Subaru telescope at last! We observe about 2400 spectra of… Read more »

The first Spectrograph Module was re-assembled at Subaru Telescope

Comments Off on The first Spectrograph Module was re-assembled at Subaru Telescope

Earlier we reported that one of the PFS instruments, the first Spectrograph Module was shipped to Hawaii Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Hawaii (see here). More recently, the module has been transported to Subaru Telescope at the summit of Maunakea, and re-assembled there. PFS Spectrograph Module consists of ten and several assemblies such as camera units, grating assemblies,… Read more »

On-telescope Test of the Metrology Camera System

Comments Off on On-telescope Test of the Metrology Camera System

From 23rd to 25th October 2018, or 4 months after Metrology Camera System (MCS) was tested on Subaru telescope, we have finally carried out 2nd test of MCS on the Subaru telescope. Since we used the telescope at night this time, this is the first engineering run with PFS instrument! MCS is the instrument to measure the positions of the… Read more »

The prototype fiber cable has been installed on the telescope

We reported that Metrology Camera System had been installed to the Subaru Telescope for the test. MCS, however, is not the only instrument for PFS to have been installed to the telescope. The prototype fiber cable was also routed on the telescope to test the optical performance about a half year ago. The work was done a little long time… Read more »

After the arrival of metrology camera at the Subaru telescope…

Comments Off on After the arrival of metrology camera at the Subaru telescope…

Since we published the article about the delivery of the Metrology Camera System (MCS) to Subaru Telescope in May this year, the member mainly from ASIAA (Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Taiwan) have visited Subaru Telescope a few times, in order to finalize the integration and proceed the on-site tests. In this article, we are going to talk… Read more »

Metrology Camera is at Subaru Telescope Now!

Comments Off on Metrology Camera is at Subaru Telescope Now!

About one month has passed since Metrology Camera was shipped from Taiwan. Now it has arrived at Subaru Telescope at Maunakea in Hawaii. After shipping, from 23 April 2018, members from Academia Sinica, Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA) visited to Hawaii Observatory of National Astronomical Observatory of Japan for final development. At Hilo base, ASIAA inspected Metrology Camera and… Read more »

The first things installed at the Subaru telescope is …

The subsystems of the PFS instrument are being developed at various institutes. These subsystems will be delivered to the Subaru telescope in Hawaii from what will be finished integration and test at the laboratory. It is already one year before the first subsystem will be delivered to the Subaru telescope, and start its integration and test there. To operate the… Read more »

Subaru renovated a dome floor for the PFS Spectrographs

In July 2017, the Spectrograph Clean Room  was finally built up on the fourth floor of the dome building at Subaru Telescope! Spectrograph Clean Room at Subaru Telescope It has been one year and a few month since the previous instrument was cleaned up from the floor, in order to accommodate four PFS spectrographs. Since then, floor has been reinforced,… Read more »

Installation of Spectrographs Clean Room Crane

The integration of the Spectrographs Clean Room has been progressing at the Subaru Telescope observatory since last May, when the floor of the dome building was cleaned up. Recently, a crane has been installed to the ceiling structure of the spectrograph floor. This 500kg-capacity crane will be used to carry the individual components and sub-assemblies of the spectrograph module such… Read more »

Renovation for the PFS spectrograph system

Comments Off on Renovation for the PFS spectrograph system

The PFS spectrograph system, consisting of four identical modules, will be accommodated in a designated clean room on the fourth floor of the Subaru telescope enclosure building. Envisioning the delivery of the first modules in 2017, we have been developing the design and implementation plan of the floor and clean room. After we had a design review meeting in August… Read more »
