SpS development is progressing

Comments Off on SpS development is progressing

This post shows recent activities for the development of the PFS Spectrograph modules. PFS project develops 4 identical Spectrograph Modules to obtain 2400 spectra in a singe exposure. Integration of the second and third Spectrograph Modules are on-going at Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) in France. As shown in the previous post, almost all units and assemblies had been delivered… Read more »

Optics for the 3rd Spectrograph Module were delivered.

Comments Off on Optics for the 3rd Spectrograph Module were delivered.

We have a news from Marseilles in France in the middle of summer. PFS uses 4 identical spectrograph modules to obtain about 2400 spectra from astronomical objects. Development of the spectrograph modules are led by Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM), and production of the optical systems such as lenses are going on by their partner, Winlight. Two sets of the PFS… Read more »

Assemble of the first Near-Infrared Camera Unit

Comments Off on Assemble of the first Near-Infrared Camera Unit

The topic of this post is the development of the Near-Infrared Camera Units at Johns Hopkins University. Each Spectrograph module of the PFS project equips three cameras — visible-blue, visible-red and near-infrared — to take spectra whose wavelength ranges from 380 nm to 1260 nm with a single shot. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and Princeton University (PU) in the United… Read more »

The first Spectrograph Module was re-assembled at Subaru Telescope

Comments Off on The first Spectrograph Module was re-assembled at Subaru Telescope

Earlier we reported that one of the PFS instruments, the first Spectrograph Module was shipped to Hawaii Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Hawaii (see here). More recently, the module has been transported to Subaru Telescope at the summit of Maunakea, and re-assembled there. PFS Spectrograph Module consists of ten and several assemblies such as camera units, grating assemblies,… Read more »

The first Spectrograph Module is heading to Subaru

In October 2019, one of the PFS instrument subsystems, the first Spectrograph Module was shipped to Hawaii Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. We obtain about 2400 spectra with four Spectrograph Modules. The Spectrograph Modules are being developed by Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM, France), Johns Hopkins University (the USA), Princeton University (the USA) and Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (Brazil). Since… Read more »

Fiber slit test done for the first spectrograph module

Comments Off on Fiber slit test done for the first spectrograph module

In this article, we are going to show recent news at Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM, France), where the first PFS Spectrograph module is being integrated. The assemblies for the first spectrograph module, such as the visible-blue and red cameras, optical bench and optical components have been delivered to LAM, as we showed in the previous article. Since then, the fiber… Read more »

Updates about Spectrograph Development

It has been about 3 months since the first blue camera cryostat was shipped to France. In this post, we are showing the updates on development of the Spectrograph systems. At Laboratorie d’Astorophysique de Marseille (LAM), we finished the performance test using only a red camera unit, and started fully integrating the first spectrograph module (called SM1). We have already… Read more »

The 1st blue camera cryostat was delivered in Marseille

In January 2018, the visible-blue camera cryostat of the first spectrograph module was shipped from Johns Hopkins University (JHU, the United States of America) to Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM, France). Visible-blue camera at Johns Hopkins University PFS are developing the four identical spectrograph modules, each of which has three channels with visible-blue, visible-red and near-infrared camera units, in order to… Read more »

Subaru renovated a dome floor for the PFS Spectrographs

In July 2017, the Spectrograph Clean Room  was finally built up on the fourth floor of the dome building at Subaru Telescope! Spectrograph Clean Room at Subaru Telescope It has been one year and a few month since the previous instrument was cleaned up from the floor, in order to accommodate four PFS spectrographs. Since then, floor has been reinforced,… Read more »

Fiber Cable: Slit Assembly of Spectrograph arrived in Marseille

For the PFS instrument, the lights from about 2400 astronomical objects are designed to be delivered through long fiber cable from the prime focus of the telescope to the spectrograph modules on the fourth floor in the dome building. This fiber cable subsystem, which is about 65m long in total, consists of 3 parts: (1) short cables accommodated into the… Read more »
