Installation of the PFS fiber cable was completed!

Comments Off on Installation of the PFS fiber cable was completed!

We achieved one milestone in early June 2023. The installation of all the fiber cables has been completed finally! Among the PFS instruments, the fiber cable system, which consists of about 2400 optical fibers, delivers the light from the prime focus of the Subaru telescope to the Spectrograph Modules. The fiber cables are assembled into four units, each of which… Read more »

The third fiber cable was installed on Subaru Telescope

Time flies: it has been a few months since the last article. In the last a few months, the integration of the PFS Spectrograph Modules (SMs) and cameras has been proceeding at LAM and JHU. At Subaru Telescope, the second SM (SM3) experienced the first light in the engineering run in November 2022 just after shipping. However, the two successive… Read more »

The second fiber cable system is now on the Subaru telescope!

Comments Off on The second fiber cable system is now on the Subaru telescope!

As we reported in the previous article, the second fiber cable system was standing by in Hilo, Hawaii, for its installation to the Subaru telescope. Thanks to the schedule arrangement by the observatory, we had a 2-week slot in April to install and test the second fiber cable system. We are going to report the installation and test activities in… Read more »

The second fiber cable unit has arrived in Hawaii

Comments Off on The second fiber cable unit has arrived in Hawaii

Happy new year! The first article in 2022 is about the subsystem delivered to Subaru telescope a while ago. In October 2021, the second fiber cable unit was shipped to Subaru telescope. PFS fiber cable system is ~55m cable connecting Prime Focus Instrument on the top of the Subaru telescope and Spectrograph System on 4th floor in the dome building…. Read more »

The first fiber cable unit has been installed on Subaru telescope

We PFS project passed two big milestones recently. We will talk about them in this post and the next. The fist milestone is the first fiber cable unit, which was delivered to Hawaii Observatory, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in the end of the last year, has been installed on Subaru telescope at last! We observe about 2400 spectra of… Read more »

The first fiber cable unit has arrived in Hawaii!

Comments Off on The first fiber cable unit has arrived in Hawaii!

Time flies — there are only a few days left in 2020. The last post of this year is about a very exciting news! The first unit of the fiber cable system has been delivered from Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA), Brazil, to Hawaii Observatory of National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) in Hawaii, the USA. PFS is the fiber… Read more »

News from Integration Work of Fiber Cable

A few month ago, we reported that we had entered on the second phase of the fiber cable integration (see this). This time we are going to show news since then. PFS catches the light of stars and galaxies by fibers installed on the prime focal plane at the top of Subaru Telescope, and obtains their spectra with the spectrograph… Read more »

Second phase of fiber cable integration started in Brazil

Comments Off on Second phase of fiber cable integration started in Brazil

PFS instrument delivers lights of stars and galaxies from the telescope to our spectrographs by a ~60m-long cable of optical fibers. As we presented in the previous post (https://pfs.ipmu.jp/blog/2017/04/p447), the fiber cables were assembled at the factory of PPC Broadband Inc. in UK. Then the cables were shipped to LNA in Brazil for the next step. If some stress such… Read more »

The prototype fiber cable has been installed on the telescope

We reported that Metrology Camera System had been installed to the Subaru Telescope for the test. MCS, however, is not the only instrument for PFS to have been installed to the telescope. The prototype fiber cable was also routed on the telescope to test the optical performance about a half year ago. The work was done a little long time… Read more »

Fiber Cable: Slit Assembly of Spectrograph arrived in Marseille

For the PFS instrument, the lights from about 2400 astronomical objects are designed to be delivered through long fiber cable from the prime focus of the telescope to the spectrograph modules on the fourth floor in the dome building. This fiber cable subsystem, which is about 65m long in total, consists of 3 parts: (1) short cables accommodated into the… Read more »
